A. Ramachandran

A. Ramachandran is one of India's priceless painters. Born in Attingal(1935), Kerala, he did his MA in Malayalam Literature at Kerala University. Then he went to Shantiniketan to study art. Between 1961 and 1964 he worked on a research project on the mural paintings of Kerala.

His first exhibition was in 1966. Then he had several solo shows and retrospectives in Delhi and Mumbai. He has also participated in some important exhibitions including Pictorial Space, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi (1977), Contemporary Indian Art, Royal Academy of Arts, London (1982), India : Myth and Reality, Museum of Modern Art, Oxford (1982) and Modern Indian Paintings, Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C.(1982).

He has written and illustrated about fifty children's picture books for which he received the Noma Concours awards in 1978 and 1980. Drisyasaram, is his collection of essays, published in Malayalam.

Noted film maker
K. Bikram Singh has made a 55 minute long video film on this renowned Indian painter: LOTUS POND – The World of Ramachandran. It was made in late 2004 following a Retrospective of Ramachandran’s works organized by the National Gallery of Modern Art. A. Ramachandran now lives at Delhi.
