Tribute to Oduvil Unnikrishnan

Oduvil Unnikrishnan

Kazcha: Mammootty, Yash

Blessy loved films from his school days. He used to watch one or two movies every week. Later he joined Sudarsa Film Society, Thiruvalla. The film society movement helped him a lot in gaining an insight into the aesthetics of cinema. Then he spent years working as assistant to the late film director Padmarajan and learnt a lot during that period. Those were the years that shaped his concept of cinema.

Soundarya

SoundaryaSoundarya (1971-2004) was popular for her graceful and dignified roles. She acted with almost all the super heroes of South Indian cinema. In ‘Sooryavansha’, she was co-starred with Amitabh Bachchan!

Soundarya, daughter of noted Kannada producer and director Satyanarayana, was born in Bangalore and her real name was Soumya. She entered the film world in 1992. She was discontinuing her medical education to make her first appearance in a Kannada film 'Gandharva'. A Kannadiga, Soundarya did not initially taste much success in Kannada except for ‘Sipayi’, in which Ravichandran and Chiranjeevi acted. But, she steadily climbed the commercial success ladder and was a hit in Telugu and Tamil movies. She acted opposite stars such as Rajinikant, Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna and Kamal Hassan.

She won the national award for producing the Kannada film ‘Dweepa’, directed by Girish Kasaravalli. She had acted in the film as well.

She acted in two Malayalam films: ‘Yathrakkarude Shradhaikku’ and ‘Kochu Kilichundan Maambazham.' It was Sathyan Anthikkadu, who introduced her in Malayalam. Her second film 'Kilichundan Maambazham' was directed by Priyadarsan.

She was on top of her movie career when she died in a helicopter crash on 17th April, 2004. Soundarya acted in more than 90 films.

Jayan

JayanIn the 1970s, Jayan was the most successful action hero of the Malayalam cinema. He established himeself as the one and only macho-star of Malluwood.
This customs officer-turned-actor was from Kollam and his real name was Krishnan Nair. He came into the silver screen in 1972, with the film, 'Sakthi.' Angadi, Sarapanjaram, Moorkhan, Naayattu, Ithikkarappakki and Karimpna were some of his super hit films.

Some more Jayan films: Ariyappedatha Rahasyam, Kolilakkam, Thadavara, Anthappuram, Benz Vasu, Idi Muzhakkam, Kaantha Valayam, Kari Puranda Jeevithangal, Manushya Mrugam, Meen, Paallattu Kunjikannan, Aavesham, Angakkuri, Anupallavai, Avano Atho Avalo, Chuvanna Chirakukal, Irumpazhikal, Ivide Kattinu Sugandam, Jayikkanaayi Janichavan , Itha Ivide Vare.

Jayan always insisted on doing his own stunts, and always avoided dupes. And this resulted in his death on 18th November, 1980. At the height of his popularity, Jayan died in an accident while shooting for the movie 'Kolilakkam.' He was trying to board an airborne helicopter.

Jayan was very different from the typical Malayalam film star in the sense that he had a good physique that befitted an action hero. His onscreen dress code, most famous for the Elvis bellbottoms, his masculine image and the nature of his death turned him into something of a legend in Kerala. Jayan was also known for his very different and unique method of dialogue delivery.
