Nottam
Samvrutha Sunil in the Malayalam movie 'Nottam' , directed by Sasi Paravoor. Depicting the soul of Koodiyattam - Kerala's ancient Sanskrit theatre art form, Sasi Paravoor brings alive the art's significance both on stage and beyond it with great sensitivity.
Director Sasi Paravoor also does the script. Screenplay and dialogue are by Salin Mankuzhy. Camera by K.G. Jayan . Lyrics are by Late Ponkunnam Damodaran and Kaithapram. M. Jayachandran is the music director.
The story tells the transformation of the strictly conservative chakkyar household when the Western-educated son brings his friend - a Christian living in the US to film and record the greatness of the art and the artist.
അമ്പതു വര്ഷം മുമ്പ് പൊന്കുന്നം ദാമോദരന് എഴുതിയ 'പച്ചപനം തത്തേ' എന്ന പാട്ട് ഉപയോഗിച്ചതു വഴി റിലീസിംഗിനു മുമ്പേ ജനശ്രദ്ധയാകര്ഷിച്ച ചിത്രമാണ് നോട്ടം. കൂടിയാട്ടം കലാകാരന്മാരുടെ നൊമ്പരങ്ങള്, പ്രതീക്ഷകള് എന്നിവ അടങ്ങിയ ജീവിത നിമിഷങ്ങളാണ് ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ ഇതിവൃത്തം.
പ്രമുഖ കൂടിയാട്ടം കലകാരി മാര്ഗി സതി ഇതില് ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ കഥാപാത്രത്തെ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. നെടുമുടി വേണു, ജഗതി ശ്രീകുമാര്, അരുണ്, സംവൃത സുനില് തുടങ്ങിയവരാണ് പ്രധാന താരങ്ങള്.

I had a chance to see the film at a preview in Mumbai. A low key film in many respects but the basic exploration of the life of a Koodiyattom performer, in a rural landscape, is endearing and realistic. The success of the film lies in the representation of a true artist and Nedumudi Venu and Margi Sathi bring their roles to life. The surprise package is Jagathy Sreekumar who plays the "vidhooshakan". He surprises us with the gentle humour and warmth unlike other garish slapstick characters he seems to play more often. He is an artiste of true calibre who deserves better chances to focus on his craft.
Though Nottam is not a comprehensive documentation of Koodiyattom, it does a simple and splendid job of presenting the art to a mainstream audience. A film that glows with simplicity and realism.
When we discus Nottam it is always,Margi Sathi, Nedumudi Venu and Jagathy Sreekumar who are mentioned. The director has shown gen-next in the traditional community in a manner that matches with reality. All traditional communities are caught in the dilemma of choosing between the need to provide continuity or letting the children join the mainstream. Here the children are not shown as being stifled by the changes. Instead they move with the times.
I saw nottam recently. It is not a low key film. Sasi Paravoor's presentation of film is excellent. Nedumudi & Jagathi simply wonderful but what about Janardhanan. His performance as a "pongan" NRI is excellent; M.R., Margi Sathi, Arun, Samvrutha, new comers (Arathi, Ajeer) also performed well. Best cinematography. Songs are extremely good with better picturisation. A worth watching movie.
i had a chance to see the film when it was running in trivandrum and i totally disagree with anjali menon the film was a superb creation of koodiyattam in the 20th century i think the credit for the film goes to the director and jagathy sreekum whose performance made us glued to our seats.
nottam was not a low key film but a high key movie the director has done a brilliant job in creating an environment which interacts with the life of perople who still value traditions and the movie shows a prospective of the buisness mind of the now generation.kudos to mr sasi paravur for a job well done.
