Kavya Madhavan on Dubbing
നമ്മുടെ നായികമാര്ക്ക് ഇനിയും സ്വന്തം ശബ്ദമില്ലാത്തതെന്താണ്? അവര്ക്ക് മധുരശബ്ദം വേണമെന്ന് ആരാണ് വാശിപിടിക്കുന്നത്? നടി കാവ്യ മാധവന് പ്രതികരിക്കുന്നു.
നമ്മുടെ നായികമാര്ക്ക് ഇനിയും സ്വന്തം ശബ്ദമില്ലാത്തതെന്താണ് ? ഈ ചോദ്യം പലപ്പോഴും ഞാന് പല മാധ്യമങ്ങളിലൂടെയും ചോദിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. എന്റെ ചിത്രങ്ങളില് ഞാന് ഡബ്ബ് ചെയ്യാതിരുന്നിട്ടില്ല. പലരും എന്നെ കൊണ്ട് ചെയ്യിച്ചിട്ടില്ല എന്നതാണ് യാഥാര്ഥ്യം.
സ്ക്രീനില് എന്റെ അഭിനയത്തില് മറ്റ് പലരുടെയും ശബ്ദം കേള്ക്കുമ്പോള് ‘അയ്യേ’എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു പോയിട്ടുണ്ട്. എന്റെ പ്രേക്ഷകര് ആ വ്യത്യാസം തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു കാണില്ല. പക്ഷേ എന്റെ ചിത്രം കാണുമ്പോള് എനിക്കത് തോന്നിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. അത്തരം ചിത്രങ്ങള് ഒരപൂര്ണതയാണ് സമ്മാനിക്കാറുള്ളത്. ഒരു നടി എന്ന നിലയില് സംതൃപ്തി സമ്മാനിച്ച ചിത്രങ്ങള് അപൂര്വമാണ്.
നായികമാര് കുയില് നാദമുള്ളവരായിരിക്കണം എന്ന പഴയ സിനിമാ സങ്കല്പങ്ങളാണ് ഡബ്ബിങ്ങില് നിന്ന് നായികമാരെ പിന്തിരിപ്പിക്കുന്നതെന്ന് തോന്നുന്നു. നിന്റെ ശബ്ദം ഡബ്ബ് ചെയ്യാന് കൊള്ളില്ല. അതായിരുന്നു എനിക്ക് ആദ്യം കിട്ടിയ ‘അംഗീകാരം’. പല ചിത്രങ്ങള്ക്കും ഡബ്ബ് ചെയ്യാന് ആശിക്കുമ്പോള് പലരും കളിയാക്കും... നിനക്ക് മമ്മൂക്കയ്ക്കും തിലകന് ചേട്ടനും പകരം ഡബ്ബ് ചെയ്യാം എന്നൊക്കെ. കമന്റുകള് അധികമായപ്പോള് എന്റെ ശബ്ദം മോശമാണെന്ന് എനിക്കു തന്നെ തോന്നി. എന്റെ ചിത്രങ്ങളില് എന്നോടു ചോദിക്കാതെ പലരും ഡബ്ബ് ചെയ്തു. ഞാന് തന്നെ ഡബ്ബ് ചെയ്യുമെന്ന് ഞാന് നിര്ബന്ധം പിടിക്കാറില്ല. മറ്റെന്തെങ്കിലും കാരണത്താല് ചിത്രം പരാജയപ്പെട്ടാല് അതിനുള്ള കാരണം എന്റെ തലയില് കെട്ടും. എട്ട് വര്ഷം കര്ണാടിക് മ്യൂസിക് പഠിച്ച കുട്ടിയാണ് ഞാന്. അതൊന്നും മനസിലാക്കാതെ എന്റെ ശബ്ദത്തെ പല സംവിധായകരും തള്ളിക്കളഞ്ഞു.
കൊച്ചുകൊച്ചു സന്തോഷങ്ങള്ക്കു ഡബ്ബ് ചെയ്യാന് വേണ്ടിയാണ് ഞാന് ആദ്യമായി എത്തിയത്. ഞാന് പത്താം ക്ലാസില് പഠിക്കുന്ന പ്രായം. ശബ്ദത്തിനു ചെയ്ഞ്ച് വരുന്ന കാലമായിരുന്നു അത്. അതിനു വേണ്ടി ഡബ്ബ് ചെയ്തപ്പോള് കഥാപാത്രത്തില് വലിയ മാറ്റം തോന്നി. സത്യനങ്കിള് പറഞ്ഞു. ‘ഈ പ്രായം ശബ്ദത്തില് മാറ്റം വരുത്തുന്ന സമയമാണ്. ശബ്ദം മാറി ക്ലിയറായതിനു ശേഷം ഡബ്ബ് ചെയ്യാം.’ശരിയായിരുന്നു അത്. എനിക്കു വിഷമം തോന്നിയില്ല.
വിനയന് സാറിന്റെ ‘ഊമപെണ്ണിന് ഉരിയാടാപയ്യന്’എന്ന ചിത്രത്തില് ഊമയായ കഥാപാത്രത്തെയാണ് ഞാന് അവതരിപ്പിച്ചത്. കഥാപാത്രം ഊമയാണെങ്കിലും ചില ശബ്ദങ്ങള് അതിന് ഡബ്ബ് ചെയ്യണമായിരുന്നു. അത് നീ തന്നെ ഡബ്ബ് ചെയ്യണമെന്ന് വിനയന് സാര് പറഞ്ഞു. മീശമാധവന്റെ ഷൂട്ടിംഗ് നിര്ത്തിവച്ച് ഞാന് തിരുവനന്തപുരത്ത് ഡബ്ബിങ്ങിനായി പോയി. മീശമാധവന്റെ സോംഗ് സീന് ഷൂട്ട് ചെയ്യുന്ന സമയമായിരുന്നു അത്. ഡബ്ബിംഗ് കഴിഞ്ഞ് അടുത്ത ദിവസം അവിചാരിതമായി ബന്ദ് വന്നു. ഞാന് സെറ്റിലെത്താതായി. ഷൂട്ടിംഗ് മുടങ്ങി. ലക്ഷങ്ങള് നഷ്ടമായി. ഊമപെണ്ണ് റിലീസ് ചെയ്തപ്പോള് പടത്തില് ഞാന് ചെയ്ത ഡബ്ബിംഗ് ഇല്ല. പകരം അത് മാറ്റി മറ്റാരോ ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നു. ‘ഊമയ്ക്ക് ഡബ്ബ് ചെയ്ത കാവ്യ’ എന്ന തമാശയിലും കമന്റിലും ഞാന് കരഞ്ഞു പോയി. അത്രയും സങ്കടമായി.
പിന്നീട് ഞാന് ഡബ്ബിംഗ് മേഖലയിലേക്ക് ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല. പക്ഷേ പിന്നീട് കമല് സാറിന്റെ പെരുമഴക്കാലം, മിഴിരണ്ടിലും, ശീലാബതി, അന്നൊരിക്കല് തുടങ്ങിയ ചിത്രങ്ങളില് ശബ്ദം കൊടുത്തു. ഇന്ന് എന്റെ സ്വന്തം ശബ്ദമേതെന്നും സിനിമയിലെ ശബ്ദമേതെന്നും പ്രേക്ഷകര്ക്കു തിരിച്ചറിയാം. എന്റെ ശബ്ദത്തെ തള്ളിപ്പറഞ്ഞവര് എന്റെ ശബ്ദത്തെ എന്നെങ്കിലും അംഗീകരിക്കുമെന്ന് എനിക്കുറപ്പുണ്ട്. കാത്തിരിക്കുകയാണ് ഞാന്.

"പി ജെ ആന്റണിയെയാണ് നീലക്കുയിലിലെ പോസ്റ്റ് മാനായി നിശ്ചയിച്ചത്. അദ്ദേഹം അന്നു നാടകങ്ങളില് തകര്ത്തഭിനയിക്കുന്ന കാലം. സെറ്റെല്ലാമൊരുക്കി കാത്തിരുന്നിട്ടും ആന്റണി എത്തിയില്ല. പകരമെത്തിയത് അസൌകര്യമറിയിച്ചുകൊണ്ടുള്ള കമ്പിയായിരുന്നു- രണ്ടാഴ്ചത്തേക്ക് വരാന് പറ്റില്ലെന്ന്. ആകെ അങ്കലാപ്പിലായി. ഷൂട്ടിങ് മുടങ്ങുമെന്ന ഘട്ടം വന്നപ്പോള് ഉറൂബാണ് പരിഹാരം ഉണ്ടാക്കിയത്. അദ്ദേഹം എന്നോടു പറഞ്ഞു: ‘താന് തന്നെ ആ റോള് ചെയ്യ്.’ രാമുവും പിന്തുണച്ചു. അങ്ങനെ സംവിധാനത്തിന്റെ തിരക്കിനും വെപ്രാളത്തിനുമിടയില് പോസ്റ്റ്മാന് വേഷവും കെട്ടി, ഇരുപത്തൊമ്പതാം വയസില് മധ്യവയസ്കനായ ശങ്കരന് നായരായി ഞാന്. അന്ന് ഞാനെടുത്തു വളര്ത്തുന്ന കുട്ടിയായി മുഖം കാട്ടിയത് ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ പ്രശസ്ത ഛായാഗ്രാഹകന് വിപിന് മോഹനായിരുന്നു."

I'm going out on a limb here... I suggest that the problem with "pennvanibham" in our state can be linked (albeit indirectly) to this dubbing issue. Indian movies objectify women -- more than most cultures. They help breed an impression among indian men (the large chunk of moviegoers)that women are like porcelain dolls -- pretty but lifeless. A doll deserves no human consideration.
The high-pitched sound of heroines is annoying to say the least. The heroine in every movie sounds the same. I am glad that at least some of the new generation of actresses -- like Navya and Meera -- are using their clout to insist on dubbing for themselves. I'm sorry to hear that Kavya is not able to do the same. Watch Meera or Navya in a Tamil movie and you can feel the difference. KPAC Lalitha, an acclaimed actress, had her voice dubbed in the Tamil version of "Aniyathi Pravu" -- "Kadhalukku Mariyadhai". It was terrible. That's when I really felt the importance of the voice to an actor.
I am totally disappointed that Sathyan Anthikkad asked for Kavya's voice to be dubbed by someone else just because she was going through a voice change. So what? Mohanlal's voice changed and no one asked to have his voice dubbed.
I read a comment posted by a payyans on IMDb for the movie "Chathikkatha Chandu". He says that the movie was near perfect except for Bhavana's voice which he felt sounded like a man and should've been dubbed. Wake up! That's what most women sound like. In Hollywood, Demi Moore's and Kathleen Turner's deep voices (much deeper than Bhavana or Kavya) are considered sexy.
I have a request to Indian men. Go home and listen to your mothers, grandmothers, sisters, girlfriends etc. How many of them sound like the women on screen? A lot of our actors have bad voices but we prefer to hear that to dubbed voices. The list of bad voices starts with Mohanlal. Others are Lal, Salim Kumar, Pappu, Janardhanan, Sreenivasan, Indrans, Mamukkoya and many more that I don't know the names of. Half of the time I can't understand what Mamukkoya or Salim Kumar are saying, but no one is asking for their voices to be dubbed.
Shame on directors like Sathyan Anthikkad and Lal Jose for insisting on actresses voices being dubbed.
Asin, a Malayali, dubs for herself in Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi, but someone else dubbed for her in her one and only Malayalam movie. She speaks Malayalam in her Tamil movie "M. Kumaran", so there was no need for a dubbing artist in Malayalam. That dubbing artist has the most annoying voice I've ever heard. You always hear that same voice on "modern" heroines.
The only solution here is for all actresses (and conscientious actors) to band together and insist that it is the artist who has the right to decide whether their voices should be dubbed. Not the director or the producer. If the issue is not resolved satisfactorily through talks, it should be taken to court.
Kerala, which boasts of a standard of living on par with the west, obviously has a lot to learn about how to treat its women.
In regards to your comment, director of the movie is the captain of the ship and he/she has the full authority on to decide to use a dubbed voice or not..I truly likes each and every actor should use their own voice but hey!! this is an entertainment industry and if the genuine voice of the actor brings the whole charisma of the movie down, then dubbed voice should be used.. In those cases, dubbing artists should try to strike a balance with the respective actor's body language..
