WHAT'S IT
ആദ്യചിത്രത്തിലൂടെ തന്നെ ശ്രദ്ധേയനായ സംവിധായകനാണ് അക്ബര് അഹമ്മദ് (പ്രിഥ്വിരാജ്). തന്റെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ ചിത്രം പഴയ സൂപ്പര്താരമായ മാളവിക(പ്രിയാ മണി) യുടെ ജീവിതത്തെ ആധാരമാക്കി ഒരുക്കാന് അക്ബര് നിശ്ചയിക്കുന്നു. ഇപ്പോള് മാളവിക എവിടെയെന്ന് ആര്ക്കും അറിവില്ല. മാളവികയുടെ ആദ്യചിത്രത്തിന്റെ സംവിധായകന് എബി(രഞ്ജിത്) യുടെ ഡയറിക്കുറിപ്പുകളില് നിന്നും കത്തുകളില് നിന്നും ആ നടിയുടെ പ്രണയകഥ അക്ബറിനു മുന്നില് തെളിയുന്നു. ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ സൂപ്പര് താരം അജയചന്ദ്രനാണ് (അനൂപ് മേനോന്) ഈ പ്രേമകഥയിലെ നായകന്. അന്വേഷണങ്ങള്ക്കിടയില് മാളവികയെ അക്ബര് കണ്ടെത്തുന്നു. അതോടെ തിരക്കഥാ രചന ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് നായികയുടെ ജീവിതത്തിലേക്ക് നേരിട്ട് ഇടപെടുകയാണ് അക്ബര്.

പൊട്ടന് കളിക്കുന്ന മലയാളസിനിമക്കാര്ക്കിടയില് ഗൌരവമുള്ള പ്രമേയവും വ്യത്യസ്തതയുള്ള ട്രീറ്റ്മെന്റും നല്കി ഒരു ചിത്രമൊരുക്കാന് രഞ്ജിത് കാട്ടിയ ധൈര്യമാണ് ഈ സിനിമയുടെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ പ്ലസ്. (രഞ്ജിത് ഈ ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ സഹനിര്മാതാവു കൂടിയാണ്.) മാളവികയായി എത്തിയ പ്രിയാമണിയുടെ പ്രകടനം അവരുടെ ദേശീയ അവാര്ഡിനെ ന്യായീകരിക്കുന്നതായി. സംവിധായകന് എബിയുടെ വേഷത്തിലെത്തിയ രഞ്ജിത്ത് അഭിനയത്തില് താന് കേമനാണെന്ന് തെളിയിച്ചു. ജീവിതമെന്ന തിരക്കഥയില് കൊള്ളാവുന്നൊരു ഡയറക്ടര് പോലുമില്ലാതെ അഭിനയിക്കേണ്ടി വരുന്ന മനുഷ്യരേക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള അക്ബറിന്റെ നിരീക്ഷണം ഹൃദയസ്പര്ശിയാണ്.
MINUSES
നടി ശ്രീവിദ്യയുടെ ജീവിതകഥയെന്ന വിശേഷണവുമായി എത്തിയതാണ് തിരക്കഥയുടെ പ്രധാന പ്രശ്നം. ശ്രീവിദ്യയുടെ കാമുകനായി കമലഹാസനെയാണ് പ്രേക്ഷകര് മനസ്സില് കാണുന്നത്. എന്നാല് ചിത്രത്തിലെ കാമുകനായ അജയചന്ദ്രന് ഒരു അവിയലാണ്; മോഹന്ലാല്, കമലഹാസന്, മമ്മൂട്ടി എന്നിവരുടെ. ഇത് കാണികളെ കുറച്ചു കുഴക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ഈ സൂപ്പര്താരങ്ങള്ക്ക് എല്ലാം പകരം നില്ക്കാന് നടന് അനൂപിനു കഴിയുന്നില്ല എന്നതാണ് മറ്റൊരു പോരായ്മ. എടുത്താല് പൊന്താത്ത ഭാരമാണ് ഈ പാവം നടന്റെ ചുമലില്.
ചിത്രത്തിലെ ഒരു ഗാനരംഗത്തിന്റെ ചിത്രീകരണം അല്പം കടന്നു പോയി. കുടുംബപ്രേക്ഷകരെ അകറ്റി നിര്ത്താന് മാത്രമേ ഇത്തരം സീനുകള് ഉപകരിക്കൂ. ശരത് ഈണമിട്ട ഗാനങ്ങളുടെ ‘സംഗതി’ നോക്കിയാല് ‘No ഗതി’ എന്നു പറയേണ്ടി വരും!
രണ്ടാം പകുതിയില് രോഗിയായി എത്തുന്ന മാളവികയുടെ മുഖത്തുള്ള ദൈന്യം ശരീരത്തില് വരുത്താന് മേക്കപ്പ് മാന് മറന്നുപോയി. ഷേപ്പ് ചെയ്ത നഖങ്ങളും മറ്റും കാണുമ്പോള് പഴയൊരു നാടകത്തില് ഹനുമാന് വാച്ചു കെട്ടിയ കാര്യം ഓര്മ വരും!
മെലോഡ്രാമയില് മുങ്ങി നില്ക്കുന്ന അന്ത്യം ഈ ചിത്രത്തിനൊരു ബാധ്യതയാണ്.
VERDICT
ശ്രദ്ധക്കുറവു കൊണ്ട് തിളക്കം കുറഞ്ഞുപോയ ഒരു നല്ല സിനിമ.

Nice review Sulekha. Saw this movie on 14th. Ranjith could have made this a classic one, but for few petty mistakes. But defenitely a movie to watch.
One other positive that probably sulekha missed was that thirakadha had some of the most beautiful lines ever heard in recent times on the malayalam screen. For eg Prithvi;s dialogue " Rogam Daya Kaanikilla. Athu kaanikendathu Manushyaraanu" and many more fresh ones like those. Ranjith can be proud of not employing any cliched dialogues throughout the movie.
Kudos to Sulekha for her comments on the famous "Sarathsir's" music. if there was anything useless in this movie it was his music. But i thought Anoop Menon pulled off his role with sufficient ease.As a viewer i thought the movie will penetrate deep into us, if we visualise sreevidya in Priyamanis scenes. Few scenes really travel to a next level,taking them with you with its emotional quotient.
May be Ranjith tried to tap Priyamani;s glamourous image at places. But in all fairness, after a series of disastrous writings [Nasrani,Rock N Roll,Prajapathi],Ranjith makes a red carpet return to form. Nice to have a good writer back in form, back to home.
Welcome Back, Ranjith. And please dont stray away next time. Loved Thirakadha..hope more people like it.
really a different and fresh attempt from renjith...very few negatives in my opinion..priyamani deserves an award(again) and anoop and prithvi rocked...samvrutha was fine...all in all a must watch for all movie lovers....i would give an 8 or 9/10
The movie is one of the best Malayalam movies I watched recently...Very bold and different...Ranjith could have made it better.Songs were below average. But main actors did very well. Give 7 out of 10.
An entire defferent and good film.
Very good review. A best example for how to write a good film review. Your comment on Idea star singer supreme court judge Sarath's music is correct. NO SANGATHY. No other media reviews Malayalam films as good as young Indulekha. Their reviews are only advertorials. Continue Indulekha, no doubt tommorrow is yours.
The movie is very good...Very good screenplay and direction. Ranjith doesn't need to do movies like Rock and roll or Prajapathi. He is talented and needs to make good movies like Thirakkadha. Give 7 or 8 out of 10.
I agree with the comments from Sulekha..The make up man's mistake on Priyamani's makeup was a very valid point and even the 80's shooting locations and shooting sequence were not convincing.Music was not at all intresting.
We should appreciate Prithviraj for taking these type of roles..
I observed some more things in the movie, that its not really showing how Akbar got intrested in Malavika's life..other than in the first song where he take some photographs at resorts( dont know if in theatre they did some editing :).
I felt the climax was bit dragging and I expected bit more classic style of ending from a Ranjith Movie.... like we saw in Nandanam or Kaioppu...with some narrataion or lines coming in... before the famous Ranjith and crew title...
One of the best film in recent times. Shots of this film is unique in many ways, kudos to the cinematographer.We all feel the freshness in the style of narration. I just give 8 out of 10 to this fim
Loved this movie...Compared to the trash churned out these days, Thirakkatha is a gem...
Renjith has a good command over the language and he uses it with ease...and his direction was good too...But what made him etch the Ajayachandran character in the shades of Mohanlal and Mammootty...? I thought the movie was about Kamal-Sreevidya romance.
Another sad thing is the crowd response. When I went for the film,the theatre was half empty. Hope Keralites will learn(again) to grace good films like this...
A movie well made will stand for generations.. thirakkadha falls into that genre; when reflected upon the malayalam films of our period. The uniqie thing apart from the narrative and structure is that thirakkadha doesnt have a prototype in malayalam cinema ; otherwise there is no percussor and so it is original.. what draws into it is the no frill approach..i differ on the songs reviw done by sulekha.. the song which starts with" arikil" is a very classy composition, and a very rare one... whther it will stand or not is the matter of time.. lets see abt it in due course...but pls do listen to arikil song.. its amazing.Acting is another area tro be commented.its all genuine performances.Considering the approach towards such a serious subject such as this; thirakkadha no doubt will be a refernce for times to come.

Really good review. Though for the glaring negatives, the film's images still haunt me - Priya Mani's acting was probably the best part of it all. Seeing the shoddy state of Malayalam cinema today, I'm ready to give this movie a 10 on 10. I hope that talented directors stay away from superstar crap like Rock'n Roll, and the famous art-loving Malayali audience starts to reject such fare.
Talking about negatives, the editing could've been improved, and the tones could have been switched as the movie moves between the past and the present. The glamor song wouldn't have been so unpleasantly provocative had they used different tones, and made it part of a movie shoot. I hope Ranjith his money back along with a few good awards...
