Ramayana Padanangal

Studies on the Ramayana by H D Sankalia, translated into Malayalam by Maithreyan. Sankalia is one of the most famous Indian archaeologists, specializing in Proto- and Ancient Indian history. He is considered to have pioneered archaeological excavation techniques in India, with several significant discoveries from the Prehistoric period to his credit.

The Ramayana is, Sankalia said, at one level the simple story of a family feud over succession, but at another level symbolic of early interaction between ‘adivasis and the aryas who had penetrated [their] forest reserve’. Sankalia did not dismiss the epic as fiction or ‘myth’. Arguing that the poet would have let slip, here and there, the material reality of his own time and culture, Sankalia the archaeologist actively sought out such clues.
